10 Bollywood Movies to watch out for in 2014

Deepika Padukone, Star of upcoming bollywod movie Finding Fanny

With Bollywood producing the biggest number of films worldwide, with around one thousand being produced last year (nearly double the amount of Hollywood), there certainly is and will continue to be an abundance of great bollywood movies out there to look out for in 2014. Here are just 10 that we have chosen:

1. 2 States

Starring the upcoming actress Alia Bhatt who co-stars alongside Arjun Kapoor in this rom-com, this film has been received well by the critics and the public alike. So much so, the film raked in a massive 38.06 crore on its opening weekend and is currently hitting the 60 crore mark! The film is based on the novel of the same name and is the story of two students who fall in love. However, their cultural differences create problems and their love is truly put to the test. The film progresses from two youths completely in love to a film of warring parents due to the north/south divide of the two families. As expected, love conquers all and the movie has a happy ending after all.

2. Kick

Kick, starring Bollywood superstar Salman Khan, is due to be released in India in July, just in time for Eid, and is predicted to be a massive hit, following the same pattern of Salman’s past releases such as Wanted and Bodyguard. This action-packed film contains life-endangering stunts carried out by Khan himself, who wants a ‘kick’ out everything he does in life, softened by an underlying romance with co-star Jaqueline Fernandez.

3. Gunday

Another big Bollywood hit for the first quarter of 2014, Gunday is about two childhood friends, Bikram and Bala, and their transmission into becoming men. Starring Ranveer Singh and Arjun Kapoor, this movie is based in Calcutta in the 1970s and focuses on the pair’s inseparable relationship and their journey from refugees to gun couriers. Despite their strong bond, love and a girl, played by Priyanka Chopra, becomes a thorn in their friendship. If you want a film with music, bromance and romance, this is a movie for you!

4. Purani Jeans

Another film which features heavily on friendship is that of Purani Jeans, which is based on the theory that the longer a friendship lasts, the better it becomes, just like a pair old jeans. The film is based on a guy named Siddarth or ‘Sid’ played by Tanuj Virwani who returns from his hometown of New York and rekindles his friendship with a group of old friends. Sid comes to realise that friendship is like Purani Jeans, the older the better, and returns to New York a better man. This is a feel-good film due to be released on 1 May 2014.

5. Highway

Alia Bhatt stars in yet another huge movie for 2014 in the dramatic and powerful Highway. Alia, who plays wealthy bride-to-be Veera Tripathi, is abducted four days prior to her getting married. Her life is then catapulted into a rollercoaster ride after spending day after day on the highway with her abductor, Randeep Hooda. Despite being thrown together reluctantly and in unimaginable circumstances, their relationship develops from fear to like and eventually love. Alia Bhatt has been commended on her acting abilities greatly by critics for her acting in Highway, with her showing a more sincere and less childlike side. Definitely a must-see!

6. Main Tera Hero

This is a light-hearted comedy, packed with musical pieces, dancing and a love triangle. Directed by David Dahwan and starring son, Varun Dahwan, this film does not take itself seriously and is peppered with Varun displaying his torso and flexing his muscles on many an occasion, with his handsome looks certainly making this watch easy on the eye. A feel-good film packed with laugh out loud moments.

7. Happy New Year

Happy New Year is due to be released towards the end of 2014. Directed by Farah Khan and starring actress Deepika Padukone and actor Shah Rukh Khan, this action-comedy movie is set to be a big hit. In order to gain as much attention towards the film prior to its release, fans were thanked for their support and the first poster for the film was not only released on social media sites, but each fan was rewarded with a personalized poster online! The film has been produced by Shak Rukh’s Red Chillies Entertainment which produced the massive hit Chennai Express and if this follows in its footsteps then we are in for a treat!

8. Youngistaan

Youngistaan was released back in March and is a story of a young man and his girlfriend who
are both living a happy, fun-filled life in Japan. However, things do take a turn for the worst when Abhimanyu’s father, who happens to be the Prime Minister of India, suddenly becomes critically ill and offers Abhimanyu the opportunity to continue his legacy. This leads to a clash between his new responsibilities and his relationship with his girlfriend. If a political, romantic drama is up your street, then give this movie a shot.

9. Jal

For the more arty types amongst you and for those who enjoy a more understated film, Jal is a more intellectual film and cinematic movie. The movie is about a man called Bakka, who is a water diviner who tries to help his thirsty village source water. The film is directed by Girish Malik, who has made his directorial debut with Jal and has certainly established a name for himself with this movie.

10. Finding Fanny

Finding Fanny is a heartwarming and light-hearted film about a man’s search for his childhood love, assisted by the help of his friends who embark with him on a road trip which turns into a funny chain of events. Featuring beautiful actress Deepika Padukone and handsome Arjun Kapoor, this film stars some of Bollywood’s finest. The film is due to be released on July 4th and is expected to be a popular one!
