10. Olly Murs
For those of you who don’t know who Olly Murs is yet, prepare to fall in love! This cheeky chappy was a runner up on hit UK talent show The X Factor. Even though Olly didn’t win the competition he certainly is one of the biggest stars to come from the show. Olly Murs has landed numerous gigs including presenting The Xtra Factor and performing at some of the biggest shows and festivals around the UK such as Radio 1’s Big Weekend and V Festival. We think Olly Murs is one of the top pop stars of 2013 for several reasons including his Brit award nomination for Best Single of the Year and his eagerly anticipated second arena tour.
9. Demi Lovato
Demi Lovato is the youngest judge on the American X Factor which just goes to show she certainly knows her stuff! At just 20 years old, Demi Lovato has achieved an exceptional amount of success including three albums, world tours and celebrity guest spots on TV shows. This year Demi released her fourth album complete with a new sophisticated image. Demi is appearing at concerts all around the world too, including New York, London and Philadelphia. Her recent single “Heart Attack” became the third fastest selling single of 2013 in its first week of release. The album itself which is appropriately titled “Demi” was released on May 10th and it landed at number three in US Billboard Charts 200 making it the best-selling debut week of her career. The album also went on to land at number one in the Canadian Album Charts. Demi is certainly doing well which is why she makes it into our top 10!
Much of the focus on Rihanna this year has been due to her romance with Chris Brown. On again. Off again. You know the rest. Despite much of her press being garnered for the wrong reasons, Rihanna’s music career is going from strength to strength. This year Rihanna won a Grammy for the music video from her single “We Found Love” and in February the Official Charts Company announced that Rihanna has sold 3,868,000 in the UK in the past year alone, making Rihanna the number one ranking artist this year amongst the Brit Award nominees.
7. Bruno Mars
Phew! Bruno Mars has been one busy pop star this year already! In April, Bruno Mars made his first appearance on the cover of Rolling Stones Magazine – one of the biggest privileges for any musician in the industry. Bruno later went on to grace the cover of one of the top magazines in the U.S – Entertainment Weekly. On top of this phenomenal press coverage Bruno Mars released tickets for his much anticipated headlining tour of the UK and has been racking up the sales. Earlier this month Bruno opened the Billboard Awards ceremony performing his single “Treasure” which received great acclaim from fans and critics alike. And it’s not just us who think Bruno is up at the top, People Magazine recently ran a feature to find out their readers “Top 10 Jams” and guess who was number one on the list? That’s right – Bruno Mars!
P!nk has been singing since the late 90’s – that’s over 10 years ago now and the star shows no sign of slowing down anytime soon. P!nk has continually reinvented herself over the years but without forgetting her fiery persona which is one of the reasons her fans adore her. P!nk is known for her energetic live performances and the incredible concerts she performs on tour. This year P!nk has launched her 6th world tour for her most recent album “The Truth About Love” and she’ll also be rocking the cover of one of the most popular woman’s magazines on the planet – Glamour USA. P!nk has also been nominated for the “Choice Female Artist 2013” at the Teen Choice Awards. So far P!nk’s biggest achievement this year has to be her single with Nate Ruess who is the lead singer of the popular band Fun. P!nk and Nate’s duet was called “Just Give Me a Reason” and it climbed to the top of the U.S iTunes store to become P!nks 14th top 10 hit on the Hot 100 list. The single stayed at the top of the Hot 100 list for three consecutive weeks!
Last year was a phenomenal year for One Direction. They performed all over the world including the London Olympics and the Royal Variety Performance in the presence of Queen Elizabeth II. However, 2013 looks set to be equally as amazing for the group. Already this year One Direction have performed at the Brit Awards; where they also won the Global Success Award and as if you couldn’t top that, The Official Charts Company announced that One Direction had sold 2,425,000 records in the UK by February 2013! For the remainder of 2013 we’ll see the group go on their second concert tour which has over 100 confirmed dates in countries all over the world including Europe and North America. The tour looks to be pretty popular too, on the first day of release over 300,000 tickets were sold. The tour sold out for their concerts in London and grossed $15.7 million for all 190,000 tickets to see performances in Australia and New Zealand. One Direction are also releasing a 3D biopic film in August which will see pivotal moments in their careers so far.
4. Justin Bieber
For the past couple of years Justin Bieber has been ruling the world of pop music. We felt Justin was a strong candidate for number one on this list for 2013 too, but there were a couple of pop stars that we think have outshone him. Despite that, Justin Bieber has done some pretty incredible things so far this year. Justin has performed at the O2 Arena in London and was also the host and musical guest on Saturday Night Live. Most recently Justin has collaborated on a track with Will.I.Am called “That Power”. The song was a massive hit, getting into the Top 10 in over 5 different countries including the UK, USA and Canada.
3. Justin Timberlake
This year Justin Timberlake made one of the biggest comebacks in music history. Justin Timberlake has taken a four year hiatus from the music industry in order to focus his talents on acting (which has also been an extremely successful venture for the star). Justin made his comeback in true style, performing the evening prior to the Super Bowl 2013 at the DirecTV Super Saturday Night. Justin’s next performance was at the prestigious 55th Grammy Awards, performing his first track from his new album, “Suit and Tie”, Justin was joined during his performance by Jay Z who also features on the track. Justin’s new album called “The 20/20 Experience” was released in March to great acclaim! The album debuted at number one in the charts and sold over 980,000 copies
2. Taylor Swift
Now, we know that recently Taylor Swift has received a lot of negative attention for her chaotic love life. But, if you put all that aside you have to give kudos to the achievements of the young star. Taylor was the youngest songwriter ever to be signed to Sony/ATV Music publishing house and is the youngest person to ever write and perform a number one track on the Country music charts. In 2012 Taylor Swift released her fourth album called “Red” which received 1.2 million in opening sales in the US; the highest recorded opening sales of an album in a decade. Taylor Swift has become the only female artist to ever receive 2 million plus sales in opening weeks, so when Taylor released her singles “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” and “I Knew You Were Trouble” they became instant worldwide hits. This year Taylor is completing the last leg of her “Red” tour in North America. Taylor Swift has sold over 25 million albums and 75 million digital downloads, which is probably why she has won 7 Grammys and 11 American Music Awards. Not bad for someone under 25 years old eh?
Beyoncé was an obvious choice for our top spot. Beyoncé has been going strong since the late 1990’s since her days with the popular girl group Destiny’s Child. Beyoncé has achieved an outstanding amount of success over the years and she certainly won’t be stopping anytime soon by the looks of things. This year Beyoncé has been part of some of the biggest events on the planet. As a close friend to President of the United States – Barack Obama, Beyoncé performed at his second inauguration in Washington D.C. The super star that is Beyoncé also performed at one of America’s biggest events; the Super Bowl XLVII halftime show. The performance by Beyoncé received an extraordinary amount of press attention. This year Beyoncé also released a documentary style film which she directed and produced herself called “Life is But a Dream”. The documentary was created from footage showing Beyoncé as a child and as she is today as a performer, mother and business woman. Other accolades that Beyoncé has achieved this year include being featured on the sound track for the remake of the movie The Great Gatsby, the Mrs Cater Show world tour (which has 65 dates) and the release of her 5th studio album. This makes us tired just thinking about how busy she is!
