The Jurassic World trailer for the sequel of the Jurassic Park franchise has recently premiered and hasn’t it created a stir! Released 22 years after the original, it is already one of the must-see films of 2015. With all the furore around the movie, it’s given us time to think about some of the greatest sequels ever made. Let’s be honest, a follow-up to a great movie has a lot to live up to and most are inferior to their predecessors. Take Jaws 2 and Oceans Twelve and Thirteen for example. But there has been a fair share of movies where the sequels have trumped the originals…
1. The Dark Knight
The second movie in the Batman Trilogy by film director Christopher Nolan can be argued to be the best of the three. Starring Christian Bale as Batman and Heath Ledger as the iconic Joker, Heath’s critically-acclaimed performance stole the movie, capturing the malice and true villainous nature of the character showcased in the original books. The level of acting throughout the movie coupled with action-packed scenes makes this stand out above the other two films in the trilogy.
Movie Trivia – Heath Ledger based his character on bassist from the Sex Pistols, Sid Vicious with The Joker’s costume designer basing the look around frontman, Johnny Rotten.
2. Terminator 2
Everyone loved the original Terminator and we are not disputing that the first movie wasn’t a success; it paved the way for the rest of the series remarkably. But when Terminator 2: Judgment Day graced our screens, it was recognized as one of the greatest action movies of all time. The films expands on its predecessor, using special effects (liquid-metal cyborg anyone?), more intense action scenes and iconic lines – ‘Hasta la Vista Baby’. The film was highly commended, and was the only film in the series to be nominated for an Oscar and won a total of 4!
Movie Trivia – Arnold Schwarzenegger was paid a total of $15 million for the film and he only spoke 700 words throughout the movie! However, he did work out intensely to ensure that he had the same muscle mass as he did in the first movie – 12 years previous!
3. Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
The Harry Potter franchise has become the highest grossing franchise of all time and it’s not surprising, worth $7.7 billion! There is a grand total of 8 films adapted from 7 books, making it difficult to choose which movie is the best. However, we must all be able to agree that the first movie, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, certainly is not the greatest in the long run of films. The series starts to pick up when the third film, Harry Potter and The Prisoner of Azkaban, was released under new director Alfonso Cuarón. The main characters seemed to have got used to be being in front of the camera and the story begins to get a lot darker and moodier and the magic of Hogwarts is established and paves the way for the future 5 films. From here on in, the movies are all great in their own right.
Movie Trivia – Ian McKellen turned down the role of Dumbledore in the movie series. His reasoning was that he already had an effort living up to one legend, Gandalf in the Lord of the Rings.
4. Dhoom 2
There has been great some Bollywood movie series’ made. Dhoom is a prime example of this. The first Dhoom movie was a huge success raking in a huge 29.5 crore in the Indian Box Offices – a huge result! This success must have created the urge for a sequel to be made which resulted in Dhoom 2. The sequel starred some of the biggest stars in Bollywood compared to the original movie, with Hrithik Roshan taking the lead role.
Movie Trivia – The kissing scene between Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan caused a court case for obscenity.
5. Home Alone – Lost in New York
As it is nearing Christmas, we thought it would be fitting to include this classic. The Home Alone trilogy is loved by all, especially during the festive season. Home Alone 2 tries to up the stakes on the first movie by taking the star of the movie, Macaulay Culkin, away from the confines of his home and making him abandoned in New York. This is a huge success, with bigger tricks and stunts played prankster Kevin McCallister.
Movie Trivia – Macaulay Culkin was paid $4.5 million for his role in the second movie, the biggest ever pay cheque for a twelve year old child.
