Directioners and Beliebers go to war as the world prepares for a release date showdown between controversial Canadian singer Justin Bieber and the biggest boyband in the world, One Direction. “Shock horror” I hear you say!
Fans went into a frenzy after both Justin Beiber and One Direction announced November 13 2015 as the release dates for their new albums. This is a brave move for both parties involved. Both are extremely successful at what they do, both are adored by fans across the globe and both are headlining news stories worldwide on a daily basis. The question on everyone’s lips is who will win the biggest album battle of the year? We’ve decided to do an analysis of the careers and tumultuous lives of both the Biebs and the 1d lads to determine who is more likely to triumph.
There’s no hiding the fact that both Bieber and One Direction have created some incredibly catchy pop songs. Some people may not admit this out loud, but there are definitely occasions where you have been sat on your own bopping along to ‘Baby’ or ‘What Makes You Beautiful‘.
Justin Bieber rose to fame after being discovered through his YouTube channel in 2007. Managed by the likes of RnB star Usher and eventually signed by record executive L.A Reid, Bieber’s career went from strength to strength. His first album ‘My World’ was released in 2009 which received platinum status and made Bieber the first artist to have seven singles from the album make the Billboard 100. Quite a feat! Many will remember the music video for ‘Baby’ which owns the accolade of being the second most watched video on YouTube after PSY’s ‘Gangnam Style’
Further albums include a Christmas album titled ‘Under The Mistletoe’ which was followed by his latest album ‘Believe’. This third album transformed Justin Bieber from an annoying child star into a more respected artist. With collaborations with the likes of Diplo, Max Martin and Darkchild, Bieber gained some respect within the music industry and saw the album reach number 1 in the Billboard Charts and achieve platinum status.
One Direction’s career began on the UK’s X Factor in 2010 in which they surprisingly took third place. With music mogul Simon Cowell by their side throughout their journey, it is no surprise that the 1D lads have achieved the success they have and they certainly have a lot more music under their belts.
With 4 albums in 4 years, One Direction have certainly been busy and their hard work has paid off. All four albums have topped the charts in all major countries and have featured hit songs from ‘Gotta be You’, ‘Story of My Life’ and ‘Live While You’re Young’ to name but a few. The band’s debut single ‘What Makes You Beautiful’ is Sony Music’s most pre-ordered single in history and topped the charts all over the world.
The band’s success has spiralled over the years. Their third album ‘Midnight Memories’ was the biggest selling album worldwide in 2013 (and it was released in November of that year!!). With such musical success, it’s no shock that the lads have won five Brit Awards, 11 MTV Music Awards and a whopping 19 Teen Choice Awards!
WINNER: One Direction – With all those awards, number ones and catchy pop songs they seem to have pipped Bieber to the post.
Beliebers and Directioners have flocked in their thousands to hundreds of tour dates across the world.
One Direction have secured a total of four concert tours under their belts compared to Justin Bieber’s two. Bieber’s debut tour supported his two-part debut album My World and My World 2.0 so it was only right to title the tour ‘My World Tour’. Remarkably, the tour lasted for 16 months, where he performed all over the world from America, Europe, Asia and more, with the tour racking up a massive $53,341,886!! This was followed by the ‘Believe’ tour which saw the pop-star play 150 show dates and took 23rd place in Pollstar’s ‘Top 50 Worldwide Tours’.
One Direction, on the other hand, appear to have never stopped touring. After their formation in 2010 the baby-faced fivesome known as One Direction have toured every year. Each tour has done exceptionally well but their most successful was the ‘Where We Are’ tour in 2014 which promoted their third album ‘Midnight Memories’. It became the 12th highest grossing tour EVER, raking in $290 million!
Despite Zayn Malik’s departure, another tour is underway due to end in October 2015. Will it beat the previous record they have set?
WINNER: One Direction – Well, they did have the 12th highest grossing tour ever…
Justin Bieber’s career has been mired by controversy. Underage drinking, allegations of getting women pregnant (at the mere age of 17), altercations with paparazzi, smoking drugs, arrests… the list goes on. In January 2014, Bieber was arrested for drink-driving and resisting arrest and charged with criminal assault. Since then, the “Baby” star seems to have turned over a new leaf, having spent the last few months apologising for his behavior.
One Direction don’t appear to have as many bad-boy scandals under their belt as Bieber does. That’s not to say that they haven’t made the headlines for some questionable behavior. Remember that time Louis Tomlinson and Zayn Malik were filmed smoking marijuana together? Or how about the revelation of Harry Style’s alleged relationship with a married radio DJ. We’re not forgetting the most recent scandals where Louis is going to become a father after just two months of dating!
The biggest controversy in One Direction’s short history may very well be the departure of Zayn Malik from the group, which came as a pretty big shock in 2015. But he didn’t leave it at that. Zayn then went on to instigate twitter spats with his bandmates and whatever celebrity he could.
WINNER: Justin Bieber – There always seems to be drama surrounding Bieber more often than not, so for that reason, Bieber wins.
Both One Direction and Justin Bieber have released feature-length films documenting their music tours. One Direction’s ‘This Is Us’ docu-film followed the 1D boys from their humble beginnings on their X-Factor journey to their performances during their ‘This Is Us’ tour. Despite criticism and poor review “This is Us” went on to become the 6th highest grossing concert movie of all time.
Topping the 6th highest grossing movie of all time seems like it would be a hard feat. Not for Justin Bieber. His concert DVD ‘Never Say Never’ is the world’s highest grossing concert movie, taking in over $77 million! Like One Direction, Justin Bieber drew a large amount of criticism and negativity from reviews, but this clearly did not deter the Beliebers. He’s also had many roles in various movies and TV shows – Zoolander 2, CSI and Behaving Badly as well as numerous cameo appearances in a number of TV shows.
WINNER: Justin Bieber – With the No.1 concert movie and various cameo roles, Bieber wins this round.
Justin Bieber and One Direction undoubtedly earn a lot of money. They are adored by teenage girls all over the world who buy a cornucopia of merchandise, tour tickets and music as soon as it’s released.
One Direction may go down as one of the highest paid bands of all time. In the past year (June 2014 – July 2015), the band earned $125 million – making them the highest paid band and the second-highest earning musician after Katy Perry! With the majority of their earnings coming from their world tour, the lads have out-earned the likes of the Rolling Stones in just four years of stardom!!
Despite Bieber not quite earning as much as the five Brits, he’s done pretty OK for a 21-year-old pop-star. He made the Forbes’s list of the Top Highest Earning Musicians in 2014, ranking at number 33rd on the The Celebrity 100 list with earnings of $80million. Not bad at all!
WINNER: One Direction – Despite being a member down and an upcoming ‘break’, the success of One Direction has not been dented. Also, due to Justin Bieber’s bad behaviour in recent months, this may negatively affect his earnings for the foreseeable future.
It’s a close one, but One Direction seem to have narrowly beaten Justin Bieber. The victory may be short lived as the Canadian singer looks to claw back a win on November 13th when both One Direction and Justin Bieber’s albums are released.
‘Made in the AM’ will be One Direction’s first album minus Zayn so it will be interesting to see whether this album will do as well as the others. Two singles have already been released from the album, namely ‘Drag Me Down’ (which has reached number 1 spots) and ‘Infinity’.
Justin Bieber has kept quiet about his upcoming album, with no title being released. Following his recent collaborations with Skrillex and Diplo, this may give an insight into what the fourth album from Bieber will be like.
