Since the day of love, Valentines Day, is approaching, we have taken a look at some of the all-time greatest on-screen jodis in Hindi cinema history. Some of the couples have even embarked on romantic relations off screen, causing much gossip and real-life romances.
Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan
Successful, talented and beautiful, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan is one of the most popular actresses in Bollywood. Coupled with Hrithik Roshan who is commonly described as the most handsome man in Bollywood, you have a pretty good recipe for success. The couple paired for the first time in Dhoom 2 back in 2006 and made quite an impact with their performance. One of the most memorable scenes from the movie is the famous kissing scene which caused quite a stir! According to Aishwarya, she was very apprehensive about the scene and worried that it would create concern amongst her fans – which it did. Aishwarya has admitted that she received legal notices stating that as a role model and icon to young girls in India, she shouldn’t be behaving in that way. Despite some criticisms to the kissing scene, Dhoom 2 did particularly well at the Box Office, becoming the highest grossing film of 2006! The duo clearly impressed, a year later they starred as a jodi in romantic drama, Guzaarish, which saw Hrithik gain critical acclaim and established him as a great actor, with his performance being described as one of the best of his career.
buy cialis no prescription Amitabh Bachchan and Rekha
Both seen as great, classical Hindi actors, this duo have starred in a huge array of films alongside each other. Their debut film together was Do Anjaane in 1976 where Amitabh and Rekha played husband and wife. From here on it was rumored that the couple shared a secret romance. The alleged affair was hot Bollywood gossip for many years, despite Amitabh being married to his current wife the whole time. Amitabh and Rekha went on to star in many movies together since up until Silsila in 1981. This was an extremely popular film due to it portraying the love triangle between Amitabh, his wife and Rekha. Rekha has often spoke about the alleged affair and admitted that she was quite apprehensive about the movie ‘I was always scared during Silsila because it was real life coming to reel life’. When the movie came to an end, so did their passionate love affair – both on and off screen. For 33 years, the duo would snub each other at parties and award functions, up until Januray 2014 where Amitabh, coupled with his wife, ended the three-decade-long snubbing with a ‘Namaste’. Fair to say that we will probably never see another film starring them both again, but at least we have some pretty good movies to remember their romance by.
Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone
Whether or not Deepika and Ranveer are dating in real life, it’s no secret that the two have an incredible chemistry together which was portrayed in Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela. The movie, which is an adaptation of the Shakespeare play Romeo and Juliet, is certainly a romantic one. The film did extremely well at the box office and was one of the highest grossing movies of 2014, probably assisted by the believable relationship between the two. Despite them both spending a considerable amount of time insisting they were not in a real-life relationship, Deepika and Ranveer are now more or less official – there have even been reports of them tying the knot this year (despite Deepika shooting these rumors down). Whether or not they are dating, there is no doubt that the duo are extremely close and it would be great if they starred as a jodi in another Bollywood movie!
Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol
SRK and Kajol are known in Bollywood as one of the most romantic couples. They star alongside each other in Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham otherwise known as KG3 where the duo fall in love, however, their romance is forbidden due to wealth and status reasons. They later went on to star in the well renowned ‘My Name is Khan’, which became the most expensive movie of 2010. The heartfelt romantic drama followed a man with Aspergers Syndrome (SRK) who fell in love with Mandira (Kajol). The movie marked the reunion of the ‘golden pair’ since KG3. It has now been 5 years since the release of My Name is Khan and recently rumors have surfaced that they SRK and Kajol may be shooting a new movie together. However, Kajol herself has refuted this news, stating that she has no idea about the film. It would be great if we got to see them on screen again!
Nargis and Raj Kapoor
Yet again we are presented with an on and off screen love affair which spanned many years. Starring in an impressive 16 movies together, including Awaraa and Shree 420,
the duo ruled the 40s and 50s movie industry. Despite being a married man with children, Raj Kapoor still encountered on a romantic relationship with Nargis but she was made heartbroken by the fact that he would never leave his wife for her. Their movies truly showcase their genuine attraction for each other. Their first movie as an on-screen couple was Andaz in 1949, a passionate love triangle story. Shree 420 is probably up there as one of the most loved movies of the couple and became the highest grossing movie of 1955 and features one of the most romantic rain scenes in Indian cinema. The song Pyar Hua Iqrar Hua is still adored across the country!
